11 - Metallic Attraction

Gold? No thank you!      Dances were a highlight of Porcelain's school life. They happened at night, she could wear the most beautiful dresses that was just right, her favorite designer heels, and jewelry. She would shine in all her Gothic Victorian glory at every dance. She looked forward to these dances every year,  but the last two years of high school were different. Prom was a very big deal.      Porcelain spent hours looking at catalogs and perusing the mall's pop-up dress stores for the season. She wanted to get a really good idea of the design she liked. She would take notes and show her mom everything she wanted in her dress. The highlight would be knowing her dress would be one-of-a-kind. Most Goths in the 80's and 90's were DIYing their clothes because not many stores catered to their styles unless you were in a metropolitan area. The closest thing Porcelain had was Hot Topic and Spencers!      After looking over everything she had gathered for her Ju

10 - Hard Lessons

Sometimes, people don't live forever.      In the Spring of Porcelain's Junior year, she learned a very hard lesson. Death would visit her family, and leave with her grandfather. Her large family was closely knit, kept in touch, always came home for holidays, etc. There were many in town at any given moment leading up to her grandfather's death. Porcelain loved having more family around ... but not for this reason. Backtracking a bit.      Porcelain and her cousins would hang out every afternoon that month. She was closer to her family than she was to others, aside from the friends she had made at school. She had gone to every dance in her Junior year and joined the art and debate clubs. It seemed as if her shyness had all but disappeared, since she had quite the social life now! Porcelain, her sister, and their friends would often hang out on the weekends, their cousins joining when they were in town. They would drive up and down Main Street blaring music, go to th

9 - Drama Queen

Freshman year in high school was a trip.      Already a bookworm, Porcelain was ready to buckle down and dig in to her new classes. She wasn't exactly a socialite because she was shy. All of that changed when she met her new group of people. They weren't the popular kids. No, rather they also avoided sun, like her. Porcelain fit right in with this Goth crowd. They understood her and she loved their attitude of not caring what other people thought. She had found her tribe!      Gothic kids had a bad rap in the 90's. Goth attire was banned at Porcelain's high school, though kids still found a way to express their style. They just had to get inventive! A lot of the gothic kids were in the Drama and Art clubs. That was all right up her alley. Porcelain loved to sketch and paint, as well as memorize every Shakespeare play she could get her hands on. She became a queen of the stage by Sophomore year, finding her voice and confidence with this new crowd.      Porcelain

8 - Growing Pains

And you thought a normal puberty was hard without having EPP.      It was the summer before 5th grade when puberty hit Porcelain like a rock. She woke up one morning with the most horrendous migraine, back aches, cramps ... Luckily her mother made this amazing raspberry leaf tea. It helped with all the symptoms! Eventually, she just became used to Tartarus recreating itself inside her body every month for an entire week. A lot of other things happened as well, such as the need for more protein. Having medium rare beef steaks (among other things) more often became part of the norm. Welcome to being a girl. Oh and contraceptives to help you say? Nope. Not an option with porphyria. It will make symptoms 100 times worse. Hormone therapy of any kind is not safe.      Other things changed as well, like her senses heightened. She noticed early on in life that her sense of smell was a lot stronger than other kids, more so when she reached her pre-teens. She knew what people had for lun
