9 - Drama Queen

Freshman year in high school was a trip.

Already a bookworm, Porcelain was ready to buckle down and dig in to her new classes. She wasn't exactly a socialite because she was shy. All of that changed when she met her new group of people. They weren't the popular kids. No, rather they also avoided sun, like her. Porcelain fit right in with this Goth crowd. They understood her and she loved their attitude of not caring what other people thought. She had found her tribe!

Gothic kids had a bad rap in the 90's. Goth attire was banned at Porcelain's high school, though kids still found a way to express their style. They just had to get inventive! A lot of the gothic kids were in the Drama and Art clubs. That was all right up her alley. Porcelain loved to sketch and paint, as well as memorize every Shakespeare play she could get her hands on. She became a queen of the stage by Sophomore year, finding her voice and confidence with this new crowd.

Porcelain's mother was very supportive and approved of her new friends. They were good kids and her mother knew they would be very mindful of her daughter's porphyria. In fact, they also loved going out at night and taking walks with Porcelain in the park. Her grades didn't falter with these new activities and friendships. She was a very dedicated student and received high marks in every class she had.

Bet you thought I was going to say she was a drama queen for other reasons, eh? *wink*

Oh how she loved the stage! One of the challenges of performing on stage was the bright lights. The drama teacher had to think outside the box when protecting Porcelain's scalp and face from these lights. The theatre-grade hypoallergenic makeup added a layer between Porcelain and the lights, keeping her from breaking out. This worked out really well, along with the skin-colored sleeves she wore.

Her mom had always let her go after her dreams, no matter how crazy they seemed, unless of course, it was dangerous.

During her Sophomore year, Porcelain had applied to be a model for the Holiday Inn Prom & Wedding Expo. She had been practicing her runway poses and had already mastered walking in 6 inch heels. She couldn't wait to get into the dresses at the show. Porcelain arrived at the show! She was careful of the lights and made her debut on the runway. It was the best day of her life! This was her goal to model at least once, because she adored fashion.

Whoever has told anyone their disability or shortcomings were a complete disadvantage and they wouldn't be able to accomplish anything in life, clearly hasn't seen these people succeed in what they strive for.

I hope I've inspired you!
