17 An Epic Short Love Story

The summer of 2000, hot, muggy and exciting.

Porcelain was 21, living in NYC for a bit now, and enjoying life. It was the place to be at the time, for someone like her. She stayed at her godparent's place in Manhattan. The Yellow Cab company knew her by her first name. The underground Goth clubs were her stomping grounds, her art business was thriving, and the night was hers.

Then she noticed him. Porcelain's striking green eyes fell on his form. He stood out like a beacon in the crowd. We'll call him Gio, short for Giovanni. He had wavy dark brunette hair, piercing blue-green eyes. Quite literally tall, dark, and handsome. His clothes hung onto him like some Greek god, right out of the Iliad. She was wearing a black lacy number, her long cherry-brunette hair hanging down past her waist. Gio's eyes met hers, and they strolled toward each other in the middle of the dance floor.

They had a whirlwind romance. Enjoying each moment while it lasted. It was Porcelain's first real relationship where she didn't have to worry about accidentally draining them. It was so nice to be with someone like herself, minus the porphyria. That summer felt like it lasted forever. Then one day Gio had to leave. He was a Navy man, and was called to leave the country for a time. They had one last, amazing, magical night together, then he left by the morning's light.

Then it began.

Porcelain felt overheated more often than she should have. She visited the bathroom what seemed like every five minutes. It hadn't even been two weeks! She made an appointment at the doctors, thinking it must have been the stomach flu, or food poisoning, or something! Five pregnancy tests, two blood tests and a round of other tests later, she finally accepted that she was indeed pregnant.

Suddenly she smiled. It was meant to be, otherwise it wouldn't have happened. She lay her hand over her stomach and just knew everything was going to be alright. She couldn't wait to tell him the news! She practically ran home and began to write another love letter to Gio. Two months went by without a word. Then a man called her on a Monday. She remembered because there was no post on Sundays. She sat down in shock. Giovanni wouldn’t be coming home to the states. Porcelain decided after a bit, it would be best to move near her mom so she would have her family to help her.

Stay tuned for part 2....!
